Clarke’s style extends to the novel’s footnotes,  which document a meticulous invented history of English magic. Arabella goes missing, then suddenly reappears, sick and weak.
He seemed to dislike the question. John Murray 2 episodes, Lucinda Dryzek I felt Stephen Black is less morally complex in the series than in the book, while Lady Pole pwn a feminist dimension. But there are no rules for magic – at least, none discernable.

And strangd when the story would be getting involved, she’d fast forward 2 years or 10 years and the sttrange part of the story, though unresolved, would be pretty much forgotten. Clarke’s giddiness comes from finding a way at once to enter the company of her literary heroes, to pay them homage and to add to the literature.
In retrospect, this might explain some of the jumps in plotting and setting, and account for the way plots were set down and then picked up a hundred pages later.

The characters, for the length of the book, are quite bizarrely very one dimensional and the surrounding characters I had absolutely no empathy with.
Eventually Strange’s heedless pursuit of long-forgotten magic threatens to destroy not only his partnership with Norrell, but everything that he holds dear.
Besides, if she had any errors, she could just remind us that ‘it’s fiction! Clarke’s characterization is definitely one of the best elements in the book.
