Gyo by Junji Ito
While Gyo does not hit the same note of seductively dreamy logic or obsessive terror of as Uzumakithe world Ito weaves is a wonderfully weird one. Apart from the ghastly, convincingly-drawn deaths, the book projects an effective atmosphere of creeping fear as the town’s inhabitants become less and less human, and more and more bizarre things begin to happen.
As these fishy menaces stampede the beaches of Japan, crawling their putrid way toward the major cites, a young couple finds themselves caught up within the mayhem.
Owaki notices Yoshida is looking for something, to which she replies she’s looking for a hole that’s shaped like herself. I think it’s about obsession, repetition, intensification to the point of spiraling out of control.
It just got dumber and dumber and dumber as it went on. Props to Junji Ito for that.
